Research has shown that static electricity generated at propane facilities can have serious consequences.  Fortunately, the remediation of risk is manageable from an economical and human resources stand point.

In an effort to assist the industry to gain a better understanding of this issue, PERC has developed a booklet, Static Electricity in the Propane Industry, to inform propane industry professionals, facility managers, company safety officials, and other responsible employees of lessons learned and information gained from research on the ignition hazards of static electricity in the propane industry. The approach is a practical one, citing science and technology where necessary.

According to PERC’s Safety & Training Advisory Committee (STAC) Chairman, Mike Walters, AmeriGas Propane, Valley Forge, PA,  “The objective of the booklet is to, equip readers with the knowledge and tools to evaluate their facility for static electrical hazards, implement remediation or mitigation actions; facilitate appropriate training/instruction for all applicable employees”.

This booklet provides a basic understanding of static electricity, its sources, common threats, and strategies that can/should be used to reduce the risk of unwanted ignition.  The sources of static electricity are varied.  It also identifies common static threats that may be present at propane handling facilities.

NEW: Got Cathodic Protection? New Program Now AvailableUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

To download the Cathodic Protection manual please click here.

With the demand for placing propane tanks underground, the industry’s need for information on how to safeguard those tanks from corrosion has increased. Fortunately, a new Cathodic Protection program is now available for all propane marketers.

This program contains training materials for propane technicians who install residential and small commercial underground ASME tanks and piping. It provides basic knowledge and requirements for the technician to properly and efficiently provide cathodic protection for underground steel ASME tanks and piping from corrosion. The program also includes a quiz with answer key and a skills evaluation form.

The Cathodic Protection program is also available through the Propane Resource Catalog (www.propanecatalog.com or 1-866-905-1075):

Cathodic Protection CD & DVD Kit (item #003715 -/$9.00 each)

Cathodic Protection Manual & DVD Kit (item #003710 /$14.00 each)

CETP and CETP E-Learning

Certified Employee Training Program (CETP)

The propane industry has developed an exciting e-learning program that will increase the availability of propane-related training programs including the industry's successful Certified Employee Training Program (CETP).

To order any of the CETP E-Learning DVDs, Basic Principles & Practices, Propane Delivery Operations and Cylinder Delivery, Bobtail Delivery Operations and the Safety and Training Administrative Record System (STARS), contact the Propane Resource Catalog by going on-line to www.propanecatalog.com or call customer service at 1-866-905-1075.

Please contact the Propane Resource Catalog to order the three completely updated CETP textbooks:  Basic Principles & Practices; Propane Delivery Operations & Cylinder Delivery; and Bobtail Delivery Operations.

The new textbooks have been updated according to the 2008 edition of NFPA 58 and the 2006 edition of NFPA 54. They are printed in color and include state-of the-art graphics.  These courses have also been streamlined and include separate glossary and resource sections, which all provide an enhanced classroom learning experience for students.

Please note that the texts for Propane Delivery Operations and Cylinder Delivery have been bundled into a single book. This combination provides greater flexibility in classroom instruction and reduces costs. The book provides information on which modules do not need to be taught to those students who seek instruction and certification only in Bobtail Delivery, and not in Cylinder Delivery.

As with the e-learning DVDs, the textbooks also include a pre-certification review that students can take prior to taking the official National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) CETP certification review.  Think of it as a pre-test before the “real thing”.

PERC’s Safety & Training Advisory Committee (STAC) Chairman, Mike Walters, Amerigas (Westlake, OH) explains, “These new courses represent STAC’s three main criteria -- technically sound, easy to deliver, and in a language and style that students can understand.”

All three textbooks and can be ordered through the Propane Resource Catalog at (866)-905-1075, or www.propanecatalog.com.

The CETP Instructor and Student Updates can now be downloaded by clicking hereThe updates were developed by PERC and were based upon industry comments and vetted by industry volunteers.  Also, included within the updates page are full PDF versions of the CETP text books.  Simply click on the designated link to download.  Please be patient as some of the files can be large.

The updates are primarily designed to update instructors and students on new codes and other changes.  PERC recomments that CETP instructors incorporate the updates into their classroom training.
